An Open Window

A short animated film dedicated to the RISD graduating class of 2020

"An Open Window"

Animated short film

Created during my final weeks as a student at RISD, I crafted this short film using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects to celebrate the accomplishments of all of my peers and to inspire us to keep creating. In the spring of 2020 we were unable to celebrate together, but this film showcases a community's collaboration to create a symphony of sound and joy to cheer on the graduate at home. Although graduation was different in 2020, this film inspires viewers to find an "open window" and make joy in new ways.

The stop motion feel of this film was created with masking and layering different textures to mimic paint, paper, and watercolor.

Problem

RISD class of 2020 is unable to have a formal in-person graduation due to lockdown restrictions during the spring of 2020.

Idea

Create an animated short to commemorate all of my classmate's accomplishments, showcasing how we can still collectively celebrate within our separate spaces throughout the city.

Goal

To bring joy and hope to my classmates who are struggling with the lack of closure and uncertainty during this period of transition.

Role

Designer, animator, and producer.

Key Insight

People are finding unique ways to cheer on healthcare workers and loved ones during this time using their balconies to make noise and music to showcase support and unity.

Category

Student Project.

Storyboarding and Art direction

The original storyboard for this film included a lantern lighting and an scene of a girl from an apartment interior. The concept was simplified to include stars and solely focus on the silhouettes outside the windows.

Test Animation

Animations used to test the sound design and textures for the short. After determining the direction through this test, the same techniques were applied to the rest

of the film in production.
